How do i get fit for afl football?

im 16 years old and i am going to join AFL football and i need to get fit fast so i can run long distances without getting puffed out fast what do i do?

Australian Rules Football takes a lot out of your body. You do not want to start playing until you are really fit. If you run out onto the field and you can’t run a lap of the football oval, you don’t have much of a chance getting through the entire game.

I recommend:

* Take it easy at first. Don’t try and run 2km if you know you can’t. Start by jogging around the block etc. Then you can start running longer distances, therefore increasing your fitness level.

* Diet. Healthy food are much better than sugary and junk foods (everyone should know that). Don’t entirely cut out all fatty and sugary foods out of your diet, just eat them in moderation. You should be aiming to eat foods that slowly release energy so you don’t have a massive energy burst for 10 minutes and then have no energy later on.

*What you drink. Stay off cordial etc. The best thing to drink is water but if you also want energy from your drink, then have Powerade or Gatorade. Do not drink a whole bottle of this stuff in one go! Have a mouthful of it every now and then. You don’t want your body to rely on Powerade or Gatorade as it’s energy source.

Have fun playing footy! Remember…’Practice Makes Perfect’ with your skills.

    How to run long distance?
    - Every day go for a walk around the street
    - Do a lap around your local park, and gradually run further and further distances

    Get fitter?
    - Do about 20 pushups/situps a day, gradually increase this amount
    - Lift weights, start off slow & at a light weight - then slowly increase as you get stronger you will be able to hold more heavier weights as you need strong arms/body to be able to be strong in marking contests.

Start exercising, and gradually incresing the work load.
    Try running laps(400m).
You should be able to run 1500m at a constant speed to be able to play good footy at u17 level.
don’t smoke or take drugs too.
    Good luck.
